it's hurts the old self-esteem enough already when there is no mail waiting for you when you check the inbox, having that exclamation mark doesn't help.
it has the tone equivalent to an asshole telling you don't have any mail.
"you don't have any mail loser! yeah!! thumbs up!!!"
