vampire weekend

an entire entry devoted to a band seems kinda much, but here we are.

the first time i heard about this indie rock group was when i saw this video.
it's a pretty cool video with them just playing on the street as they walk to a pub. i don't think the it was planned as the people in the pub seemed like they didn't know what was going on when they came in and sat down playing. bonus points for using a melodica in the song and it was pretty cool in the second song when the drummer drummed on the back of a chair.

their songs are pretty cool, with "carefree, African-influenced rhythms." i haven't really paid attention to the lyrics but they're fun to decipher. they remind of the strokes... but more upbeat and less emo.

i wanted to pick up their cd but i couldn't find it at walmart or circuit city. i guess they're still too underground, and i guess i'll have buy it online. the group is made up of columbia graduates, and i'm pretty sure these ivy league grads don't need the money from my cd purchase. they probably have a nice trust fund or have what it takes to get a cushy job. but the thing is they have that and they choose to play their music. you can either see that as something admirable or stupid.

the band was also featured in GQ magazine. the band members look like they fit in the whole preppy/stuffy east coast ivy league scene with their sport coats, oxford shirts, club ties, argyle socks, and boat shoes. it's not a bad look, but it's something you wouldn't think of when you hear indie rock. they're the opposite of hipster. i'm no opposed of any kinda fashion as long i feel good in it, and i'm not opposed to any type of music as long as it can make my head bop.
